Looking for Comfort in a Time of Loss

As you face this loss, those around you have trouble knowing what to say. We want to offer you words of comfort and condolence, to make this trauma easier for you. We just don’t always know how.
I wish I could tell you that everything will be fine and normal.
The truth is, things will never be the same again.
I wish I could tell you that the hurt will go away.
The truth is, the pain will ease but the scar will not vanish.
I wish I could tell you that I knew why this happened.
The truth is, I don’t but I know Who does.

Holding to hope in the face of tragedy

"Today we grieve another horror, another atrocity. The shootings in a suburban Denver theater strike another blow at our faith, seeking to discourage us and turn us away from the hope we have in God. There are no words that can take away the pain of the loss of a loved one. Only the comfort of knowing that we shall see them again can help us get through the sorrow."

Lessons Learned from Whitney Houston - Devotions from the Road of Life

"The late Whitney Houston had a powerful voice, great family lineage and some very human problems. Like all of us, she was imperfect. Like all of us, she made mistakes. And all of us can learn something from her. Here are some of the lessons I've learned."

Thanksgiving Meditation

"As we approach Thanksgiving, let us remember not only the physical things God gives us, but also the second chances and fresh starts He offers. Most of all, let us remember the greatest Gift of all, His Son.

Father, please accept our meager thanks and keep us in a grateful spirit every day. When we get so busy that we forget to say the words, may You find them inscribed on our hearts in praise for You."

Training the Next Generation-Devotions from the Road of Life

"I know that Father's Day is a few months past, but lately I've found myself dwelling on the subject of fatherhood and parenting in general. A couple of things have honed my focus.

The first is the latest movie from Sherwood Productions, 'Courageous.'"

Easter in My Heart - a Look at Some Scriptures that Mean Easter to Me

"Easter brings with it conflicting emotions: the sorrow of the crucifixion, the fear of the followers, and the joy of the discovery of His resurrection. Promises made and promises kept pass in review as I ponder the meaning of Easter.

Before He was taken, Jesus talked about the difficult times ahead. He promised peace and a place with Him."

Calvary-The First Christmas Tree

"I recently had a strange sort of a thought. I don't know where it could have come from, except from God, because I don't think I could have come up with this alone. Here it is: the very first Christmas tree was the Cross of Calvary.

As I pondered the idea, I realized how much sense it made. If we call the day 'Christmas' or 'Christ-mass,' a mass celebrating His birth as the start of a sacrifice, then the very first Mass was the day of His sacrifice, the Crucifixion. Which would make the cross to which He was nailed the tree of the first Christ-mass."

No Room - a Christmas Edition of Devotions from the Road of Life

"And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn." Luke 2:7, King James Version

“No Vacancy.” The sign means good news for an innkeeper, but trouble for a traveler. The situation was no different that first Christmas. Although Luke doesn’t tell us so, I can picture Joseph and Mary trudging from one place to another in growing desperation.
